As you lay dying, I am invited into your home.
You’re anxious about what is to come.
You have questions.
You have regrets.
You’re thinking of loved ones you aren’t ready to say goodbye to.
You’re thinking of loved ones who have gone ahead of you and you wonder if you’ll see them again.
You’re riding a rollercoaster of emotions.
And here I am.
I represent the Church.
I represent your faith.
I represent Jesus.
You look into me and try to find your answers.
Your family is gathered around and they too move between your eyes and mine, searching.
There are stories and memories and jokes.
There are tears and groans and whispers.
Soft kisses.
Gentle hand squeezes.
Prayers.
“No one looks forward to the day when the pastor is called to the house.”
But the call was made and here I am.
And you lay dying.
“Don’t be afraid.”
“God loves you.”
“Everything will be alright.”
And it will, because God is love and love casts out fear.
Focus on the love you have received…the love you have given.
Remember the love.
God does and so we will.
Life is better together,
Shawn
